Happy Half Birthday, Leyton!

Dear Mr. Leyton,

Happy half birthday to you! 5 1/2 years--how quickly the time has passed since you were our wee little munchkin, charming everyone with those big blue eyes and sweet smile. Even though you aren't quite so wee anymore, you are still quite the charmer! Some things never change, and I hope this quality is one that will last. There is not a girl in your class that doesn't love being around you, and I have been told more times than I can count that one little girl or the next considers you "her guy." What a ladies man! This year you have expanded your friendships to include the boys in your class as well, which is great to see. But it's funny when you come home after playing with your boy buddies and ask us what Ninjago is. You still know more about Ariel and Belle than superheroes and Star Wars. :)

I've said it before, but I will say it again. You are Mr. Creative, artsy-fartsy, imaginative and more artistic than I could dream of being. There is no doubt in my mind that you will be some sort of designer/artist when you grow up. Your preschool teacher can hardly believe what you come up with on a regular basis in class, and as I walk the halls, I am constantly told by the other teachers what a great artist you are. It's true, and I hope that we can continue to help you develop your talents in this area. Your creativity and attention to detail are very inspiring!

Your greatest playmate is your little brother. You and Callan are the best of friends and the worst of enemies. It is so fun to watch you two together when you're getting along. You love to play Backyardigans, build forts, and pretty much boss him into doing whatever it is you want to do at that moment. Most of the time he takes it in stride, but when he's had enough, I will often find you two going at it in an all-out punching match! Boys will be boys.

I think getting a little sister this past year has been the toughest on you. I didn't expect that at all, but when I really think about it, it makes perfect sense to me. You really love E, but I know sometimes the pangs of jealousy are just too much to bear. Given that, I think right now you feel like you are the "bad one" in the family, and that makes me so sad. I hope you know how much we LOVE YOU, Leyton, for all your gifts, sweetness, and the laughter and joy you bring to our house every day. You are and always will be our little miracle baby, a perfect gift from God. We wouldn't trade you for anything!

Today for your half birthday we had "make your own pizza" night. You picked out cupcakes--red velvet for you and vanilla bean for the rest of us. :) Typical, Leyton. I love it!

Cheers to our amazing little boy--our sparkling beauty--our Leyton Hill Smiff!

Love,
Mom
