Leyton visited Dr. Bodine yesterday for his six month well-baby exam, and all is looking well! He is proving to be a long lean machine, and I'm really thinking the basketball court will be calling his name before we know it. This month, Leyton weighed in at 17 pounds, 4 ounces and measured 28 inches long. That puts him in the 50th percentile for weight and 90th for height. (Just for comparison, Brody weighed 19 pounds, 5 ounces and was 27 1/4 inches long. Two pounds heavier! What a chub!) Leyton wowed the doc with his bird shrieks, smiles, and rolls all over the examination table. He seems to be right on track with all his milestones, and we couldn't be happier.
The only concern for this worried mama are his eyes. He seems to have fine vision, but both irises have something wacky going on. On his right side, it appears that he has a little slice taken out of his pupil, and on the left side, it looks like his pupil is completely misshapen. Dr. Bodine thinks it's the irises, not the pupils, that are shaped a little strangely, and he doesn't think there is anything to worry about. However, he put a call in to the pediatric opthamologist for a second opinion. I am anxiously waiting to hear what he says. I hope that it just turns out to be an aesthetic issue and not a vision issue, but if it does turn out to be the latter, we will just deal with it however we need to to make sure our little man is okay!
So, what new things is the littlest Smith up to? Well, he's ALMOST sitting up. In fact, today I thought for sure that he could do it all by himself, and he could...for about 10-20 seconds before falling over. He has also started babbling with a few consonant sounds. I think he still prefers the bird shrieks, but his babbling is starting to sound more like human conversation than something that would land him a spot at the MN Zoo. :) He is a real giggle-monster, and just laughs and laughs when Brody talks to him or when we all start singing silly songs--and when mama blows on his belly--he loves that! And finally, we've moved on to some new solids this week--banana and avocado. So far he is happy to eat whatever has been offered, although the bananas did freak him out a little bit at first.
Here are some video clips from his first attempt at avocado this afternoon. Avocado went over much better with Leyton than it did with Brody. I'm happy to know at least one of my children might love them as much as I do!
